Book Review: Going Under

Book Review: Going Under by S. Walden

Brooke Wright has only two goals her senior year at Charity Run High School: stay out of trouble and learn to forgive herself for the past. Forgiveness proves elusive, and trouble finds her anyway when she discovers a secret club at school connected to the death of her best friend. She learns that swim team members participate in a "Fantasy Slut League," scoring points for their sexual acts with unsuspecting girls.

Brooke, wracked with guilt over her friend's death, decides to infiltrate the league by becoming one of the "unsuspecting girls," and exact revenge on the boys who stole away her best friend. An unexpected romance complicates her plans, and her dogged pursuit of justice turns her reckless as she underestimates just how far the boys will go to keep their sex club a secret.

My thoughts: I absolutely loved this book. The subject matter is tough and gritty and dealt with very tastefully. It's obvious that the author did her research and did a great job portraying the characters. You know when you not only like the good guys but loathe the bad guys, you're reading a well written book. I can't think of anything I didn't like about the book. Well written and edited. It kept me turning the pages, wanting -- no needing -- to know what was going to happen and whether or not those assholes would get what was coming to them. It makes you really think and wonder how many clubs like this exist. Brooke was a great main character. I loved her humor. Sometimes, I worried about her choices, but it was part of the story line and I can't say that she did anything particularly dumb, though she wanted to. If you like true-to-life, gritty stories with a swoon-worthy romance, and a great plot... Going Under is your book!
