Today it is my honor to interview Kari from Cover to Cover Designs. Kari designed the beautiful cover for Megan Keith's: Finding My Way!
SRNA: Hello Kari, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for our readers!
CTC: Thanks so much for inviting me!
SRNA: How did you get started designing book covers?
CTC: I friended one of my favorite authors, Ann Lister, on Facebook. We became really good friends and when she found out that I did graphic design, she asked if I’d like to design her upcoming book cover. At that point I had no clue about self publishing or how book covers were born, but I totally jumped on it. It was a lot of fun and really rewarding and then one led to another.
SRNA: Where do you come up with all of the graphics that you incorporate into your designs? Do you use stock or do you photograph the images yourself?
CTC: I use stock images from several different resources and also am in contact with a few photographers that will do a custom shoot if the author requests it.
SRNA: Do you read the book before you design the cover, or do you work from descriptions from the author?
CTC: If it's possible I love to read the book first, if not then a synopsis works fine too. I really like to have a feel for the mood of the story and the personalities of the characters. If I don’t get to read the book before I design the cover, then once its released I read it.
SRNA: Which graphics program(s) do you use?
CTC: I use PhotoShop and Illustrator.
SRNA: In addition to book cover design, what other services do you offer?
CTC: I design web sites, promotional graphics and swag (bookmarks, business cards, etc), and also offer virtual assistance to authors.
SRNA: What is the typical turnaround time for a book cover?
CTC: Typical turn around is 2 to 3 weeks and I charge $85 for an e-book and paperback cover design.
SRNA: I have often been guilty of buying a book for its cover. :) Are there any particular covers you look at and think, "Wow, I wish I had designed that one!"?
CTC: There are two on my Kindle right now that I really admire. The first one is the Edge of Never. I haven’t read it yet and have no idea what its about, but I downloaded it based solely on the cover and title. The other is My Misery Muse, because I love the male model and want him for my own book. :)
SRNA: Do you offer pre-made book covers or do you strictly work with made-to-order designs?
CTC: Right now I only design made to order covers.
SRNA: Finally, just for fun, what's your sign? :)
CTC: I’m a Capricorn, born January 14.
About Kari: I fell in love with reading when I was six years old, and have always been fascinated with pretty covers. I've been designing web sites, graphics and marketing materials for 16 years. I live in New Hampshire with my husband and our multitude of fuzzy pets. I buy way too many books and I have an unhealthy addiction to Starbucks.
