Interview: Wicked by Design

Today we welcome Robin Harper from Wicked by Design Book Covers!

SRNA: Welcome to She Reads New Adult, Robin!

RH: Thank you so much! As I told you I'm pretty geeked to be doing my first interview. I have a major case of the warm fuzzies.

SRNA: How did you get started with designing book covers?

RH: I had a few friends ask for some help with their covers, just a little photo manipulation and I was encouraged to go big. I have been doing graphic design for about a billion years - ok more like the last, geesh, 15+ with a lot of breaks in between for various life related things like having kids, but designing covers has definitely been the most fun and challenging and I do my best to improve my skills every chance I get, I'm always learning.

SRNA: In addition to book cover design, what other services do you offer authors?

RH: I also offer FB covers, swag, banners.. massages. I'm an all in one service.

SRNA: What is the typical turnaround time for doing a book cover?

RH: Typical is 1-2 days depending on how complicated it is, but I like tell authors to count on about a week to allow for changes and adjustments.

SRNA: What software do you use?

RH: I mainly use Photoshop CS6, InDesign and Illustrator.

SRNA: Do you purchase stock, or photograph your own models?

RH: Right now it is mainly stock photos but I have had several author purchase photos directly from photographers (which is awesome) and I am planning on offering customized photography in the very near future!

SRNA: Are there any of your cover designs that you are especially proud of? I know that's probably a hard question, but say you had to pick just one, which one would it be?

RH: I honestly can not answer that!! Every time I finish one I say "this is my new favorite" haha I love them all but I can say that my most Recent favorite is Ignite by Tessa Teevan which will be revealed soon! But the most recent one that I Can show is Moore to Lose by Julie Richman.

SRNA: How do you get a feel for what the author wants? Do you have them describe what they're looking for? Do you read the book first? How does that work?

RH: My process involves talking to the author and finding out what they have envisioned, if they are unclear then we brainstorm to figure out what they want their cover to "say". I always read the blurb, if they have one, sometimes I will read a few chapters. My main goal though is to create something that speaks to the author as well as their readers and I involve the author in the process as much as I can.

SRNA: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how people can get in contact with you.

RH: Well my name is Robin and I love long walks on the beach and my biggest pet peeve is people who are mean. But seriously, I really do on both those counts. I'm also a wife and mommy first and foremost. I have a son and daughter. My son is severely autistic and my daughter is way too quickly approaching the preteen years so I am always, always busy as well as highly entertained! I was born and raised in So. California and now reside in Western Washington. Sometimes I feel like a hot mess but I own it and I'm fun to be around so that makes up for it.

My website will be up and available soon but for now the best way to contact me is through my facebook page or through email.

SRNA: Lastly, what's your sign? (I ask everyone this).

RH: I'm an Aries. I once read somewhere the motto for Aries is "Ready, Fire, Aim!" and that is all too accurate for me. I love to just throw myself into the fire and figure my way out once I get there. It doesn't always work out but again, I'm never bored. I'm also quite passionate about my beliefs and about my family and friends. I'm an Aries through and through!
